If I use my windows recovery disk to restore my system, will this usually remove any virus?
This is assuming the computer was virus free when I made the recovery disk.
If the answer is no, then can I fdisk my entire hard drive and reformat, then reinstall windows from the recovery disk?
Usually using the Windows recovery disk to reformat the disk and reinstall the operating system will remove most viruses.
I had to reformat/reinstall after Mebroot, however, and that was not the case. After reformat/reinstall, I had to boot into the Windows Recovery Console and type the command /fixmbr .
Be sure your recovery disk is not infected also. If you are unsure, I would recommend getting a known clean copy. You can usually visit the manufacturer's web site and order a recovery disk from them, that way you can be sure it is not an infected recovery disk. Have ready your computer's manufacturer, series, model number, and some ask for the serial number.
